Council Housing Every year London Housing, part of London Councils, surveys all London councils to compare their rents and service charges. This briefing highlights key points for rents and service charges for London’s council tenants in 2006/07.
Key points:
- London council rents increased by an average of £15 per month (4.7 percent) to £330 per month in 2006/07
- Only one council (Harrow) left rents unchanged
- Wandsworth has the highest increase (at just over 7 per cent) for the third year running
- Apart from Harrow, Kensington and Chelsea has the lowest increase at 3.2 per cent
- The Government’s average target rent for London councils in 2006/07, based on its rent restructuring formula, is £345 per month
- Four councils have rents that are more than 15 per cent below the Government’s target rent for their area
- City of London has the largest gap between actual and target rent at 19 per cent
- Actual and target rents will need to converge by the end of the 10-year restructuring period in 2011/12
- The Government has agreed to a 5 per cent cap on average council rent increases for two years
- Despite this, six London councils have increased their rent by more than 5 per cent this year.
